Cesis Castle was one of the first stone fortresses built in present-day Latvia (construction work begun 1207) by the German crusaders. The complex of building remains is a relic of monumental architecture preserved over the centuries, reflecting the building traditions and art styles of the Livonian era. The castle was badly damaged in the wars of the 16th and 17th century, and after the ravages of the Northern War it was never rebuilt. Every summer Medieval festival is held in the gardens of Cesis Castle, a major event inviting us to savour the atmosphere of a medieval Cesis.
