Trakai Island Castle


Trakai Island Castle was built throughout the period starting at the end of the 14th century up to the 15th century. This Gothic castle with Romanesque features was built by Grand Duke Vytautas who ruled 1392-1430. During the wars with Russia in the 17th century the 300 year old castle was ruined. The rebuilt castle, standing on one of the islands of Lake Galve, has become one of the most majestic and famous monuments of defensive architecture of the Middle Ages.
