Kastelholm was mentioned in the historical sources for the first time in 1388 by the name "Kastelholms hus" (the house of the castle island). The castle was originally founded on a small island and at that time it consisted of three parts which were residential part, the small bailey and the guard tower. These were all surrounded by a ring wall. Afterwards the castle was expanded with a stronger ring wall which made the foundation for the castles contemporary forecastle.
Kastelholm was ruled by a royal governer until 1634 when province stopped to be an independent castle province and was set under the rule of the governor of Åbo. Before that, in 1619, the castle was again destroyed in a big fire. From then on the castle little by little lost its importance and was slowly ruined.
