
Vyborg Castle was founded by Swedes in 1293 after the third crusade made to Finland under the command of Torgils Knutsson. More than four centuries castle belonged to the Swedish crown and in the 15th century it was considered as one of Sweden's most beautiful buildings. From the 18th century on Vyborg Castle has been a part of both Russia and Finland.
Vyborg Castle got its present appearance at the end of the 19th century. Today the castle is housed by the State Museum.
