Vordingborg Castle

Throughout most of the medieval times, Vordingborg was both the most important castle and the preferred residence of the Danish Kings. It was from here the fleet of King Valdemar I (the Great) sailed out to christen and conquer the Slavonian tribes in North Germany in the second part of the 12th Century. It was also from Vordingborg his son Valdemar II (the Victorious) succeeded in establishing an empire that, besides Denmark, included most of the areas along the south- and eastern coasts of the Baltic Sea, from Hamburg to Estonia.

Valdemar IV (Atterdag) rebuilt the castle completely in the 14th Century. The new Vordingborg was a strong, state of the art fortress with an inner and an outer castle area, both surrounded by strong curtain walls and numerous towers. The fully preserved Gåsetårn (Goose Tower) and the extensive ruins all date back to this period. On the grounds you also find the Danish Castle Centre with exhibitions and a variety of hand on activities for children.

Location

The castle of Vordingborg is attractively situated on the South-Zealand coast of the Baltic Sea with breathtaking views over the surrounding waters and landscapes ? an ideal location for both offensive and defensive warfare in the Baltic Sea area.
