
Birzai fortress was built by Duke Kristupas Radvila Perkunas in 1589 to protect Northern border of Lithuanian - Polish Kingdom. It was destroyed in 1625. Duke Kristupas Radvila II began to build the second fortress in Birzai. It was a bastion fortress of Nytherland style and was destroyed by Swedes in 1704. And at last the residential palace of Birzai fortress was restored in 1986. Since 1989 here is Sela museum of Birzai region. Fortress territory is still twisted by ramparts and ravine with water. The palace and remainders of the other buildings of Birzai fortress are architectural monuments.
